It was time for a ‘team building exercise’ at the chemical plant. The foreperson, Johnno, tried to rouse up his crew.
‘HDPE!’ he shouted to his team. ‘Gimme an H!’
‘H’, they enthusiastically responded.
‘Gimme a D!’ he yelled, fist in the air.
‘D!’, they replied, their fists higher than his.
‘Gimme a P’, he said, getting louder.
‘P!’ they responded with increasing fervour.
‘Gimme an E!’ he said, a final time.
‘E!’ they called out.
‘Whadda ya got?’ he asked.
‘HDPE!!’ they replied en masse.
What Does HDPE Mean?
‘What does HDPE mean?
Brooksy looked around to his mate sitting next to them, puzzled look on his face that said, ‘Do you know?’
Macca replied, ‘Nup’.
Mumbled, low pitched voices spread throughout the room.
‘This is the stuff you handle every day’, the foreperson called out in despair. ‘Ya don’t even know what it means?’
‘Nup’, they replied. ‘We just work here’.
Shaking his head in dismay, he started giving clues.
‘What’s the opposite of low?’
‘High’, they replied.
‘Yes, high. That’s what the H is for’.
‘Ahhhh,’ they mumbled. ‘High’.
Any guesses for the D?
‘Depth?’ shouted Banjo with a scrunched up face that said he wasn’t sure if that was right but wanted this ‘exercise’ to be over so he could get back to work installing chemical tanks.
‘Nope, sorry Banjo’, said the foreperson. ‘Anyone else?’
Silence.
‘What’s a measure of how much something weighs based on its volume?’
‘Density?’ offered Banjo.
‘Yes! Density!!’
PE Means Polyethylene
‘If you didn’t get the H or the D, we’re not even gonna try for the P. It’s poly. And the E is for ethylene.’
‘Is polyethylene the stuff that’s in Coke bottles?’ piped in Brad.
‘Not quite. HDPE means high density polyethylene. Coke bottles are made of PET, or polyethylene terephthalate. Different stuff. Can you imagine us installing chemical tanks made of the same plastic that’s in Coke bottles?
‘Nup. They’d be mangled as soon as Woosh knocked his forklift against one.
Laughter erupted throughout the room.
‘Gimme a break’, said Woosh. ‘It only happened once’.
